Regional issues on firm entry and exit in Argentina: core and peripheral regions

Abstract:
This thesis empirically analyzes the role of regional factors in the business dynamics of developing countries. Development, taking Argentina as an illustrative case. This is a novelty for the empirical literature, the Which is almost exclusively circumscribed to the developed countries. The determinants of Entry and exit of companies in the Argentine provinces in the period 2003-2008 through the use of Models for panel data with integer variables. The results indicate that although most of the variables Used in explaining the business dynamics in developed countries are relevant, it is necessary to include Variables that reflect the specificities of Argentina as a developing country (eg Poverty, the size of the informal sector or the use of idle capacity existing after a crisis). Further, Through the analysis of regional and sectoral variables, it is found that the factors that explain the entry and exit Of companies at the regional level differ in low, medium or high technology industries. Finally, evidence is shown Of a center-periphery pattern in the spatial structure of the inputs and outputs, which is relevant for all Sectors. Given that regional policies aimed at encouraging the entry of enterprises are based on Evidence from developed countries, the results obtained call into When applied to developing countries.
