    Abstract:
Cardiovascular diseases are a huge health-care problem in our society, currently OMS conclude that more than two-thirds of cardiovascular deaths occur in low-income and middle-income countries. Health-care programs implementation has been able to decrease its prevalence in high-income countries. Inside of this diseases group, the most known pathology is ischaemic heart disease, where acute myocardial infarction is included and it is the most known. Ischaemic heart disease are characterized by a huge burden of arterial territories affected, but those are less than peripheral artery disease, the atherosclerotic charge is greater on the second one. Common bases in atherosclerotic diseases are its inflammatory aetiology. Deregulation in pro-oxidant and antioxidant processes increases genetic expression of inflammatory molecules, this is the premise which directs the project to the research of oxidative stress related biomarkers. On first step of the study were observed that F2-isoprostane and CCL2 concentrations show significant increases and an excellent capacity to discriminate health subjects from patients group. On second step in this investigation were evaluated galectin-3 concentrations, correlating to oxidative stress and inflammation serological markers, it was observed increased values in patients compared to control group with a diagnostic precision similar to established biomarkers which are used to evaluate peripheral artery disease, B2M and PCR, in contrast, ratio galectin-3/PCR showed better precision, only a few less than F2-isoprostanes and CCL2; this fact represents an advantage because of galectin-3 can be easily deployed in clinician laboratories. On this second step were evaluated galectin-3 tissue expression in femoral and popliteal arteries in health subjects and patients, and were observed that expression in health subjects were in tunica adventitia and, in contrast, in patients it was expressed in tunica media and intima; with these results we could conclude that galectin-3 could participate in atherosclerotic plaque formation.
