Abstract:
The latest data published by Statistical National Institute (INE) showed that suicide was the first external reason of death in Spain, in 2015. The suicide ideation can be the first signal of a possible future suicidal behavior, so it is very important to have instruments to assess and detect suicide ideation as soon as possible, to carry out an adequate prevention of self-harming behavior.
Taking into account the lack of self-administered questionnaires in Spanish specially designed to assess suicide ideation in adolescents, the main goal of this research is developing a new questionnaire, with adequate psychometric properties to assess suicide ideation in this sample, with a situational approach. For this reason, the questionnaire developed, named SIQUE, includes 10 situations that an adolescent may live with family, friends, or unknown people, some positives and others negatives. For each situation, it is presented 9 alternatives answers, some of them linked to negative suicide ideation an others with positive suicide ideation. It was administered to a sample of 435 subjects with ages between 15 to 19 years old (53% women). It was carried out using a three-mode component analysis in order to know the underlying components. Convergent and discriminant validity were also assessed.
Results showed two components for the responses and two components for the situations. We also found two latent dimensions for persons: Negative attitude to life and Positive attitude to life. Moreover, results showed that this questionary has an adequate internal consistency and an adequate convergent and discriminant validity, taking into account the correlations found between the dimensions for persons and the other variables: personality traits, depressive symptomatology, life's satisfaction and psychological maturity.
