    Abstract:
Hyperprolactinaemia is a common condition in subjects with a psychotic disorder and the most studied consequences have been the ones related to the secondary hypogonadism. However, prolactin plays important roles in other tissues and some of them are poorly understood. The negative relationship between increased prolactin levels and some cognitive processes has been demonstrated in animal studies and non-psychiatric populations. This project aims to explore the relationship between prolactin levels and cognitive habilities in patients with an early psychosis. We also analize whether prolactin reduction is associated with cognitive improvement in patients with prolactinomas. The results of this work suggest that high prolactin levels could have a negative effect in some cognitive processes in patients with an early psychosis, mostly in men. The reduction in prolactin levels in patients with prolactinoma is followed by an improvement in cognitive abilities in several domains. This findings suggest that dopaminergic agonist drugs could have a procognitive effect in people with cronic hyperprolactinaemia.
