    Abstract:
The thesis presents a complete study of Athenian black figure vases attributed to the Tyrrhenian Group, manufactured between the beginning of the second quarter of the 6th century BC until c. 545 BC and exported to Etruria. The work discusses the characteristics of the vases and technique and style of each of the eight painters who have been recognized as Tyrrhenian. An exhaustive vase catalogue gathers 232 examples with detailed information about every single piece. The focus of the study is set on the iconographical motives of the vases. The depictions on the Tyrrhenian corpus are discussed and compared to vase paintings of both earlier and contemporary Athenian artisans. In some cases, the iconographic genesis of a mythological motif can be found on pottery from Corinth, Laconia and Boeotia. The iconographic influence of the Tyrrhenian Group on the Etruscan production, especially the Pontic Group, has also been established and analysed. The Pontic Group brought to an end the import of the Tyrrhenian Group. Domestic potters incorporated many of the iconographic motives into their oeuvre and added local variations.
