Abstract:
The fundamental aim of this study was to improve understanding of the impact of the intensity and extent of pain, fatigue, dream quality and catastrophic thoughts on pain in the functioning of older people. It includes three specific objectives, which are related. First, it was to expand the available information on the validity of the Fatigue Silhouette Scale (FSS), by using it with elderly people. Secondly, we wanted to know better the role of intensity, the extent of pain, fatigue, the quality of sleep and catastrophic thoughts in the interference of pain. Thirdly, we wanted to know better the role of intensity, the extent of pain, fatigue and catastrophic thoughts in the quality of the dream of the elderly. We worked with a sample of 105 people over the age of 65 from Geriatric centres, day centres, retired households and neighbourhood associations in the cities of Tarragona, Reus and Salou. The results confirm the concurrent and discriminatory validity of the FSS's scores for evaluating fatigue in this group of elderly people. Additionally, pain interference is associated with higher age, fatigue, and catastrophic thoughts about pain and a lower dream quality. And finally, it was found that catastrophic thoughts present a significant negative association with the dream quality of the participants.
