La repressió franquista a les Terres de l’Ebre (1938-1948)

Abstract:
This study will analyze what the advent of the Second Spanish Republic meant for women and men in Catalonia and for the general population, based on the legislation it passed. It will examine to what extent Franco's repression of Catalonia, which began on July 17, 1936, was different to that in the rest of Spain, and analyse how Francoist legislation, in particular the Code of Military Justice, was applied without conclusive proof to condemn to prison or death those who had defended the republican democracy. It will ascertain the number of women and men from Terres de l'Ebre who were shot by firing squad or died due to illness during their captivity in Pilats prison (Tarragona) and other penitentiary centres as a result of Franco's repression, as well as those who were executed outside the region of Terres l'Ebre. Two lines have been taken as the basis of the research: archival research in the military archives of Barcelona and Madrid, and the archives where the prison records are held; and the bibliography on Francoist repression. The central axis of research will revolve around the study of courts-martial and how they were carried out. The focus on the location where the accused were charged, as well as their place of birth and residence, will mean that the quantitative map of victims will provide a more realistic representation than that which currently exists. The opening of the files containing the courts-martial and the full transcription of the sentence and the statements of each of the accused will provide a clear view of the farce which was the judicial procedures used to convict them.
