    Abstract:
Work based on the study of the peptide neurotensin (NT) and / or its precursor, pro-neurotensin (pro-NT), as a biomark er for the diagnosis and monitoring of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD has become the most common cause of chronic liver disease in children and adults, associated with the global epidemic of obesity and the metabolic syndrome. One of the molecules related to the pathophysiology of obesity is NT. However, its relationship with NAFLD has been poorly studied and the data are controversial. Two studies were conducted analyzing the levels of NT and pro-NT in a sample of women with morbid obesity (MO) an d NAFLD to investigate the role of the peptide in the pathogenesis of NAFLD, and at the same time, investigate its relat ionship with lipid metabolism hepatic. In the first study that analyzed NT levels, it was shown that the presence of NAFLD, but not obesity, was associated wit h low plasma levels of NT. However, the bibliography was contradictory and the second study was carried out, analyzin g pro-NT (precursor of NT and more stable molecule), which confirmed that pro-NT levels are higher in NAFLD and NA SH; and it was evidenced that the hepatic expression of genes related to lipid metabolism are altered in NAFLD and th at although pro-NT levels were correlated with LDLc, there was no association with the main genes related to lipid met abolism.
