    Abstract:
The transformation of the mental health care model with a view to Community strategies, both in Brazil and in Spain, was a challenge that had citizen participation as a fundamental aspect of the paradigm shift. Thus, I conduct an analysis of first-person participation in the field of mental health, making approximations and differences between mental health policies and ways of participating. I use the metaphor of the casteller and mandala as a representation of citizen participation and organization between the two countries. To carry out this task, I performed an ethnography in the VOICE Federation. The concept 'In the first person' refers to individuals who live in a serious mental health problem and who outweigh the role of patient, as an agent of their existence, participating in the decisions of their own life and policies. In Catalonia, the associative movement plays a significant role as a form of civil society participation. However, the subsidy model that allows entities to have autonomy to develop projects also produces an administrative gear of dependency.
