    Abstract:
Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular condition that can have a negative impact on patients’ quality of life and cause them increased stress when dealing with complications. Social support can buffer exposure to stress by helping sufferers to perceive the experience as less harmful or threatening and providing them with valuable coping resources. For this purpose, a cross-sectional study was carried out in people diagnosed with myasthenia gravis living in Spain and Latin America. The questionnaires were completed online, and the participants were contacted through associations and/or foundations or social media. The aim was to study the epidemiology, as well as the perceived social support and its relationship with other factors in people with a confirmed diagnosis of myasthenia gravis. A total of 1131 participants were analysed in this study, of whom 19.6% resided in Spain and 80.4% in Latin America. Participants from Spain reported higher levels of perceived social support, perceived fatigue and anxiety than participants from Latin America, but participants from Latin America employed more emotion-focused coping strategies. In addition, a low perception of social support was associated with lower quality of life, greater perceived fatigue, anxiety, depression and MG symptoms, and the use of maladaptive coping strategies.
