    Abstract:
This doctoral thesis collects, through qualitative methodology, the experiences of caring in community in seven collaborative homes for the elderly in Spain. Collaborative homes for the elderly in Spain represent a paradigm shift in cohabitation, focusing on care from a community perspective and self-care, while advocating for healthy and activist aging. Many of the people who live or plan to live in a collaborative home are gerontolescents (a new life stage) and see collaborative homes as a measure of anticipation and resolution for the near future in an environment where the community cares for one another and care builds community. This form of cohabitation has experienced significant growth in Spain, as well as in other countries where it has been developed, due to demographic changes, transformations in expectations of family care and assistance, increased divergence from traditional family residence patterns, changes in property transmission and inheritance patterns, and the promotion of more active aging.
