    Abstract:
River sediments constitute a reservoir of fungal species with multiple applications, and important pathogens for plants and animals, as well. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the diversity of filamentous Ascomycota in river sediments. In Spain, we dispose some punctual studies focused in keratinolytic Ascomycota from sediments of the river mouth of Catalan rivers, although their identification are not truly reliable, because they were identified according to morphological criteria. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the diversity of filamentous Ascomycota obtained in culture and identified molecularly from river sediments collected in rivers and streams in Spain. This kind of study is the first performed in Spain. In this study, sediments were collected from more than 40 sample points of rivers and streams from different geographical areas. With the objective of obtaining the highest diversity of Ascomycota, we used three different culture media for its isolation. We have studied 866 strains which were examined morphologically, and they were identified molecularly from the analysis of sequences of different genetic barcodes. We have identified the 94.23 % of the strains until species level, the remaining strains have been subjected to polyphasic studies, which allowed us to propose and delineate a new family in Ascomycota, 6 new genera and 26 new species
