Are Cultural, Creative Industries and Tourism the ultimate solution for the development of peripheral areas? Spatial insights for Italian Inner Areas

Abstract:
This thesis contributes to the literature on inner and peripheral areas and offers insights into the challenges and opportunities of promoting their economic development through Cultural, Creative Industries (CCIs) and Tourism. By providing empirical evidence from the Italian context, it highlights the need for tailored policies to address the specificities of these territories and maximise the potential interaction between CCIs and Tourism sectors. The empirical analysis is based on the dataset for Italian firms and establishments managed by ISTAT, which contains detailed information on ATECO sectors (classification of economic activities), structure, and location of the establishments, combined with the spatial classification of the Italian municipalities according to the Italian National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI). The applied methodologies include spatial econometrics models, drawing a comprehensive picture of the spatial distribution of CCIs and tourism establishments in 2018. The results show that CCIs and tourism are not complementary: inner peripheral areas tend to host tourism establishments excluding CCIs sectors, while CCIs follow different spatial patterns, more urban dependent.
