Abstract:
In recent years, feminist, anti-racist, and queer social movements have permeated everyday discourses and practices, demonstrating the possibility of constructing alternatives to current forms of social organization. However, concurrently, we have also witnessed a resurgence of reactionary narratives that deny the existence of gender-related violence or seek to further restrict the rights of queer and migrant communities. In this context, this thesis aims to contribute to feminist methodological debates from an embodied perspective that recognizes the value of research as a political tool for social transformation. Specifically, it proposes the photovoice method (Wang & Burris, 1994, 1997) as a means to develop intersectional counter-narratives and alliances in the face of the ongoing anti-democratic drift. Although initially situated within Participatory Action Research (PAR) and influenced by feminist theory, this thesis compoused of four scientific publications seeks to enhance the critical and political potential of photovoice by positioning it within feminist epistemologies and methodologies. Drawing on the insights garnered from these investigations and as the main contribution of this doctoral dissertation, I propose a feminist epistemic-methodological model for conducting photovoice research. I also reflect on how photovoice framed in this model can be a profoundly useful strategy for fostering networks against violence and strengthening the political praxis of intersectionality in the face of the current reactionary drift.
