'La Cultura de la Victoria': Simbología, ritos festivos y espacio público en la Catalunya franquista (1939-1945)

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis aims to analyze the policies of the Francoist regime oriented towards controlling public space through the implementation of symbolic mechanisms and festive rituals. In a post-war context and within the geographical framework of Catalonia, the establishment of what has been termed the 'Culture of Victory' was used as a tool to dominate public space through ceremonies, rituals, monuments, or propaganda speeches. The objective was to achieve the regime's legitimization through the constant and permanent reminder of Victory in the war. These policies were also used to unite the population allied with the winning side while humiliating and oppressing the defeated, who were excluded from any commemoration and blamed for all evils. Furthermore, this research aims to complement the analysis of symbolic policies on public space with the study of social responses, seeking to offer a more comprehensive view of the attitude and public adherence shown towards these policies. This research aims to introduce a new perspective for analyzing the complex postwar period of the Franco regime, focusing on the regime's policies aimed at imposing a symbolic mantle over public space. Rites, monuments to the fallen, newly created traditions, a new festive calendar, and liturgical rituals will intertwine with the time, space, and daily life of the population, coexisting in a postwar environment where hunger, misery, and terror were constant.
