Abstract:
Objectives: To assess socioeconomic characteristics, health status, dependency, and life quality of elderly people.<br/><br/>Descriptive cross-sectional study of a representative population of Reus-2004 from randomly selected groups stratified by age. <br/><br/>5% of these people are in trouble to cover basic needs, 14.4% lack of someone who to help them, 10% judged that their homes were not furnished well enough, 22.6% are owners, 20% live alone, 8% have architectonical obstacles, and 10% declared illiteracy.<br/><br/>Health status: 20% have cognitive impairments, 26% are in depression, 54% present nutritional risk and 71% are fragile. It is important to note the enlargement of heart failures with age.<br/><br/>Factors that are associated to functional dependence: cognitive impairment, multiple disorders, deafness, nutritional risk and age not gender. <br/><br/>Factors that are associated to a deterioration of life quality: illiteracy, low socioeconomic status, polypharmacy, recent hospitalization, cognitive impairment, depression, risk of malnutrition, functional dependence and gender.
