    Abstract:
This study explores the functional relationship between theory of mind (ToM), language comprehension (LC), intelligence, executive function (EF) and psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia. A group of patients (22) and a control group (22) have been assessed using 3 ToM tasks, 8 LC tasks, 1 reduced intelligence test, and 7 EF tasks. Overall, the results show that patients have a specific ToM deficit. At the basic level, LC has not been found to be especially altered in patients, although they exhibited an impairment in figurative language comprehension (FLC). Partial correlation analyses show a primary connection between impairment in ToM and impairment in FLC, and that association is not better explained by intellectual and/or executive decline. The severity of the psychotic symptoms in patients is closely related to both mentalizing deficits and to pragmatic competence impairments.
