    Recently greater attention has been paid to the presence of organic pollutants in wastewater treatment plants, mainly because of strict environmental regulations and the possibility of reusing treated water in industrial processes. Many organic pollutants may not be completely removed or degraded in conventional activated sludge treatment plants by the treatment processes. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new processes to improve the efficiency of compound removal in conventional plants and also investigate the presence of these compounds in theses treatment plants. In order to investigate the presence of these organic compounds in wastewaters, the development of sensitive methods to determine them at low concentrations is necessary. Several methods have been developed to determine primary aliphatic amines and nitrosamines in the influents, effluents and sludge from industrial and urban wastewater treatment plants and potable water plant, mainly using the solid-phase microextraction technique followed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.
