    Resumen:
Our work studies and characterized the city and territory of Tarraco, and evolution from late Antiquity to the middle ages. From the Arab and Christian textual sources, but mostly from archaeology, architecture and the historical landscape analysis, we establish traits of continuity, rupture and transformation of the old formulas of late habitat until the consolidation of the feudal system. The case of Tarraco is special; It is the only Roman provincial capital of Hispania which is virtually uninhabited after the Islamic conquest of the years 711-720. Arab texts define the ancient roman city as it 'balda' (village), and archaeology confirms this abandonment by the elite and the hispanvisigoth population. We have evidence of a settlement of rural type radically far away from urban forms of the past. During the centuries VIII - XI a.d. The physiognomy of the Roman and Visigothic city remained broadly. This 'photo sets' of Tarraco constitute the basis on which feudal conquistadors built the medieval town, especially from the second half of the 12th century AD. During the centuries VIII - XII the territory assigned to Tarragona will constitute a genuine frontier land between al - Andalus i the County of Barcelona. But it was not of a depopulated territory or land of none; the border was populated and not static, changing its geographic boundaries and their political status was. In a complex historical process, the ancient ager Tarraconensis is progressively disintegrated in different local realities, marked by the presence of al - Andalus in the Eastern Strip i a gradual advance of the feudal forces of the County of Barcelona.
