Strategies for innovation and sustainability: determinants and effects of spanish and european firms

Resumen:
The main aim of this doctoral thesis has been to provide new insights regarding the determinants and effects of the innovation strategies based on an empirical investigation on microdata, i.e. firm level data extracted from two innovation surveys, the Spanish Technological Innovation Panel and the Flash Eurobarometer Survey. The thesis is structured in three different but strictly related papers. The first paper examines the impact that different types of innovation strategies (absence, mixed, and oriented strategies) can have in firms’ innovation success. The second paper is devoted at understanding the determinants of one particular innovation strategy, that is the eco-innovation strategy by focusing on the role that technology push, market pull, environmental policies as well as the firms’ structural characteristics, play in spurring a green orientation. While in the last paper, it is analysed the economic implications of adopting an eco-motivation for firms. We not only differentiated between different typologies of resource efficient practices, but also considered the intensity and the breadth of the eco-practices implemented to be greener. A general conclusive Chapter follows the three essays and outline how each of the three papers filled the research gaps that emerged, how its results can be interpreted, which policy implications can be derived, and which are the possible future lines of research in the field.
