    Resumen:
Pain is an highly complex sensory and emotional experience. In patients with cancer, pain is present at the time of diagnosis between 30-50% of patients and in advanced stages between 70-90%. It is estimated that between 30% and 60% of them will experience chronic pain. Pain has an impact in their lives. It is a key determinant of the deterioration of the patient's quality of life, producing a devastating effect on many aspects of the patient's daily life (sleep disorders, fatigue, decreased physical activity, deterioration of social relationships, lack of appetite etc.). However, despite the high incidence and morbidity involved, there is still no theoretical model to determine precisely the appearance of pain or its persistence, nor its potential impact. Having this information is essential to develop better treatments, including to promote the prevention of chronic pain and disability in people with cancer. The objective of this thesis is to provide additional new information to improve our understanding of pain in patients with cancer, in order to prevent or mitigate its impact and improve patients’ quality of life.
