    Resumen:
An effective multimodal nursing intervention based on disciplinary theory and scientific evidence is required to support first-time mothers during the postpartum period. To evaluate the efficacy of a new multimodal nursing intervention focused on supporting the process of becoming a mother for first-time mothers of full-term babies, by assessing the effect of the intervention on measures of becoming a mother, perceived maternal self-efficacy, functional social support, and mother-child bond using valid and reliable instruments. A translation / backtranslation and cultural adaptation process facial, content, construct, and reliability validity was performen. Involved a randomized, double-blind controlled trial of two parallel groups conducted during four months of postpartum as follow-up of each participant. An intention-to-treat analysis was made. Cultural adaptations were made to the Adoption of the Maternal Role scale. Construct validation identified ten factors. Cronbach's alpha was 0.96. The Perceived Maternal Parental Self-Efficacy questionnaire was adapted both linguistically and culturally. Construct validation identified two factors. Cronbach's alpha was 0.97. Linguistic and cultural adaptations were made to the Functional Social Support tool. Construct validation identified two factors. Cronbach's alpha was 0.97. The intervention proved effective in supporting the process of becoming a mother measured at four months postpartum, with a very large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.50 and NNT = 1.07). The intervention improved perceived maternal self-efficacy, functional social support and mother-child bond with a very large effect size. This dissertation makes an important contribution by presenting three instruments with cultural adaptation and robust psychometric properties for use in practice and research, and makes a significant contribution to maternal child nursing through a new intervention that will surely yield benefits for present and future maternal and child health.
