Speaking of Sebastià Juan Arbó’s collection of novels, the basis is a thematic, linguistic and formal division that finds its turning point in 1939 and in the postwar political and cultural consequences. In this first stage the audience and the critics discover Arbó, who deploys his novelistic essence, a voice that will condition its subsequent production. To demonstrate how Arbó’s work is accepted in the literary panorama of the thirties is one of the goals of this doctoral thesis. However, it also aims to continue the research of Arbó’s literary career, which has been only studied until Tino Costa’s publication, in 1947. With the perpetuation of the nineteenth-century narrative’s model, the audacity and the existentialist tone from the first novels are lost. In order to stablish and synthesize the parameters of his collection of novels we must analyze it on the whole. In this way, a recurrent universe which amplifies Arbó’s literary and personal corpus makes sense. When realizing a complete study of his work, a linguistic discrimination cannot be made: that is why both Catalan and Spanish prose fictions become the subject of study. The after the forties silence regarding Arbó’s collection of novels shows that the need to complete this lack of narrative critics that destabilizes all the studies done until today. Consequently, the main aim of this investigation is to discuss the relevance of Arbó’s figure and work in the cultural and literary Catalan context of his time, as well as in the Spanish literary context as a Catalan author who writes in Spanish about autochthonous topics. The project is divided into three main blocks which correspond the way Arbó makes him known (from 1931 until 1984), to aspects related to the writer’s profession (language, political convictions, articles) and to the analysis of its whole narrative work.
