Resumen:
This thesis aims to demonstrate the important role of the population of Canet de Mar in the maritime trade of the 18th century. The research undertaken has revealed who the protagonists from Canet de Mar in this tradewere, the character of their actions and the extent of their interventions. The different expeditions led by Catalan skippers, particularly those from Canet, show the evolution of the participation of Catalonia in the so called Carrera de Indias during the 18th century. The diverse aspects and relationships between shipowners, charterers, skippers and ships’ crews have been studied in each one of the five successive chronological phases in which the above mentioned century has been divided: 1700-1720 (Precedents); 1720-1740 (Barcelona-Cadis); 1740-1765 (First phase of the Carrera); 1765-1778 (Law of Barlovento); and 1778-1800 (Free Trade). The thesis highlights the differences and particularities of each period with particular attention to the contracts of freightage (destination, cost, cargo, conditions, etc.) and of crew (wages, obligations, etc.). A specific chapter is dedicated to the contracts of Catalan ships issued by the Royal Treasury during this century.
