Resumen:
Onomastics of the Morell. Study and inventory presents, in the first place, the compilation of the names of place and person of the municipality of El Morell. This work is developed in a field with an important tradition in the framework of the Catalan language and, especially, in the Camp de Tarragona. The research is based, on the one hand, on the method of the personal interview to the informants for the oral sources; and, on the other hand, on the methodology of the documentary research typical of the historical sciences and philology. The work aims to contribute to the preservation of place names and personal names, and thus prevent them from falling into oblivion, taking into account the changes in the economic model of the area studied and the consequences they have especially on toponymy.
Secondly, the thesis presents the philological analysis of the inventory, based on the five parts of grammar: semantics, lexicon, morphology, phonetics and syntax. The most remarkable aspect of this analysis is the approach given to semantics, based on the observation of the ways in which toponyms and anthroponyms are generated, which has made it possible to establish two large groups of onomastic units: those that contain a semantically fossilized common name and those that do not.
Finally, the research has made it possible to confirm the loss of traditional forms, which are sometimes fossilized in toponyms and anthroponyms; it has also made it possible to confirm how the growing standardization inevitably leads to the loss of the characteristics of the dialectal variety, as well as the strength of the penetration of Spanish, which makes it highly recommendable to focus language policy on onomastics in order to try to preserve it as much as possible.
