Exploring Carbon Capture and Storage: Bridging the Gap Between Laboratory and Industry

    Resumen:
    This doctoral thesis investigates CO2 capture and mineralization in the steel industry, focusing on CELSA as a case study. Chapter 2 evaluates established carbon capture technologies like amine scrubbing and vacuum swing adsorption, finding them technically feasible but not yet economically viable for immediate implementation at CELSA. Chapters 3 and 4 delve into the promising metal-organic framework TAMOF-1, demonstrating its high selectivity for CO2 in various gas mixtures and its potential for post-combustion capture and biogas upgrading. Both experimental and theoretical analyses support its effectiveness. Chapter 5 shifts the focus to CO2 storage, examining the potential of CELSA slags as a medium for carbonate formation. This characterization not only contributes to waste management but also advances the concept of circular material usage. Overall, this research comprehensively explores both CO2 capture and storage within the steel industry, contributing valuable insights to the ongoing efforts to mitigate climate change and develop a more sustainable, low-carbon economy.
