    Resumen:
THE FORMS OF LANGUAGE SPOKEN IN LA RIBERA D'EBRE. A GEOLINGUISTIC STUDYBefore describing the aim and findings of this research, some words about the target region are needed. La Ribera d'Ebre is a region located in Terres de l'Ebre, a geographical label used since some time ago to identify the southern regions of Catalonia. The present research focuses on the forms of language spoken in La Ribera d'Ebre. The objectives of this study are to make a linguistic description of these forms of language, by using detailed information and qualitative methods, and to dawn up different maps with the findings. Thus, this research contains a double piece of work: on one hand, it is a dialectological study based on the casual forms of language spoken in La Ribera d'Ebre; on the other hand, it is a geolinguistic study, in the sense that it contains an atlas with 1475 synthetic maps grouped according to different semantic fields. However, the conclusion maps used in the research are not synthetic but they are drawn up using isoglosses to present the findings.Since the main aim of this research is not a sociolinguistic aim , only the oldest generations of speakers were chosen as informants. By doing so, one can make sure that the data obtained is more homogeneous and, furthermore, the findings can give way to futher pieces of research taking different approaches. One of the main objectives of this research is to draw the boundary between two sub dialects: lleidatà and tortosí. Previous atudies on this issue have already concluded that the forms of language spoken in La Ribera d'Ebre belong to the North-occidental dialect of Catalan. However, none of them has gone further to determine to which sub dialect do they belong. According to the present research, it can be concluded that these forms of language share mainly the features of the North-occidental dialect. Those linguistic featuresthat they share with the Valencian dialect are mostly lexical and, furthermore, some features from south-oriental dialect can be found. The isoglosses for these features cross one another since they are drawn up sometimes vertically and other times horizontally. After analysing the data obtained, the present doctoral thesis concludes that, since this region represents the intersection point between both sub dialects (lleidatà and tortosí) from a geolinguistic point of view, features from both sub dialects can be found there. In the northern villages features from lleidatà can be found more often; on the contrary, in the southern villages features from tortosí are more present. La Ribera d'Ebre represents the transition boundary between both sub dialects. To conclude with, this region could be divided in two parts: the northern part, which comprises the forms of language from the mountain range of Pas de l'Ase up to the north, and the southern part, which comprises the forms of language from Pas de l'Ase down to the south. The linguistic features that enable us to make this division are both phonetic and morphological or lexical features.Furthermore, a subdivision could be made in the northern part and the village La Palma d'Ebre could have its own subgroup, since it is the village where more features from lleidatà can be found. Also the village Faió could have its own subgroup, since it shows some linguistic features that differ from the other forms of language in la Ribera d'Ebre and are shared with other forms of Catalan spoken in autonomous community of Aragon. Also some other subdivisions could be made in the southern part, and the villages Darmós, La Serra d'Almos and, sometimes, also Tivissa, could have their own subgroup, since they share features with the forms of language spoken in the Prioritat region and with the Oriental block of Catalan dialects. If we take into account the morphological and lexical features, the forms of language used in the villages Benissanet, Miravet, Ginestar, Rasquera, and sometimes also Tivissa, could also have a subgroup, sharing more features with tortosí than the other villages.
