Resumen:
This research includes a study of alternative medicine –from a perspective medical, anthropological and historical– of the four Catalan southern regions (Terres l'Ebre, TTE) during the contemporary age, underlining its survival and continuity to the present moment in a territory characterized by their secular isolation. So, I came to oral, written sources –libraries, archives, newspaper–, internet pages, as well as other sources. Dispersion of published articles not allowed until the moment a comprehensive reading on folk medicine or alternative practices or, also even, on the medical practice of doctor Garcia Roca. I would stress and interesting light about the agglutinating role of the Bishop of Tortosa in the common culture that is observed in the studied territory. The thesis includes a methodological introduction, six chapters, followed by conclusions and a documentary annex. The first chapter examines the current biomedical model. The herbal medicine of them, TTE, comprises the second. The quack medicine and symbolic thought are covered in the third. Christianity as religion therapeutics, including exorcisms and popular religiosity, are discussed in the fourth. The medical practice of doctor Garcia Roca look at in the fifth and hydrotherapy comprises the sixth. The documentary annex contains interviews, photos and other documents.
