Abstract:
The best food for a newborn and especially if they are preterm babies (<37 weeks) and/or with very low birth weight (VLBW; <1500kg), is the mom's own milk, since it has a nutritional composition that makes it unique. It covers all the needs and provides a great range of benefits related to the prevention of infections, sepsis, and neurodevelopment, among others. Nevertheless, when for any reason it is not available, the best alternative is retrieve it from human milk donors provided by milk banks. Regardless of being subjugated to a pasteurization process, which makes it lose bioactive components, optimal requirements can be covered with an adequate fortification. Moreover, milk banks represent a useful tool, not only in the recollection of milk, but also in promoting breastfeeding. Being the existent information about this topic intensely reviewed and knowing that its development is increasingly growing, we believe both mother milk donation and the creation of new Milk Banks should be promoted. The main reason why is that compared to other European countries, their knowledge and management results as insufficient.
