Abstract:
Assisted Therapy with Companion Animals is currently a therapeutic resource of undoubted value in the treatment of institutionalized elderly people. These types of people often suffer dementia, depression, emotional deficits or physical problems that limit the enjoyment of a full life to a greater or lesser extent. Assisted therapy with companion animals, especially the dog, reverts to important institutional, physical, psychological and emotional benefits. The objective of this work is the realization of a systematic review through which the role of AAT as complementary and / or alternative treatment in the treatment of elderly people and in the favoring of an active aging is analyzed. This is a systematic quantitative review of the literature related to AATs in institutionalized older people. The bibliographic search was carried out in the health sciences databases: PubMed, Cuiden, Cinahl, Dialnet and Scopus. The results of this study show the undoubted benefits AATs in the treatment of institutionalized elderly people, especially those related to the improvement of socialization, physical condition, emotional state and the decrease of anxiety and the depressive symptomatology. In the case of elders with dementia, AAT helps to stimulate the cognitive function, the contact with reality and to delay behavioral disorders such as agitation and aggression. The realization of the study allows concluding that the AAT is a valid therapy in the improvement of the quality of life of institutionalized elderly people.
