Precision study of simulated distillation of kerosene using GC-FID

    Abstract:
    Distillation process is one of the most important in a refinery, it is based on the separation of hydrocarbons for their different boiling point. Many compounds are produced in this process; one of them is kerosene a distillation product from the middle fraction used as fuel in aviation. Another fundamental part of the process of refining is the quality control laboratory where combustibles are tested to accomplish international standards and commercial specifications, for that reason, distillation is one of the analysis carried out for analysts. There are two types of distillation: atmospheric (automatic and micro distiller) and simulated (GC-FID). The aim of this project is to compare the three methods of distillation and test their precision studying repeatability and reproducibility of instruments according to international standards such as ASTM D86, ASTM D7345 and UNE-EN ISO 3924. It would determine if it is possible to replace atmospheric distillation for simulated distillation which means less amount of sample, time of analysis and simpler procedures. Moreover, adjustment factors would be calculated to decrease differences between methods. An internal reference material would also be prepared to verify the chromatograph. Samples of kerosene would be used all over the project. This project would be carried out in the laboratory of Repsol Petróleo S.A. under the supervision of Enric Ruiz Morillas.
