Abstract:
AIMS: To explore the bases of the general and specific interventions of the nursing professional to reduce the smoking habit in psychiatric patients, to later analyze and justify their effectiveness. METHOD: A total of 215 very relevant articles were identified in the Pubmed database, by using these key search words “The Medical Subject Headings: "Mental Health", "Smoking Cessation" and "Nursing"”. The included topics were the ones that met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: 35 articles were selected for this literature review: 7 cross-sectional studies, 18 future-oriented studies, 3 qualitative studies, 4 systematic reviews and 3 literary reviews. CONCLUSIONS: Smoking presents one of the main goals in Public Health. However, even with protocols tailored towards preventing this addiction for the general public, there is still a lack of said aid for Mental Health patients, be it because of either beliefs or unfounded prejudices. Furthermore, it has been shown that the prevalence of tobacco usage is higher in the population suffering from mental illnesses. The results demonstrate that a substantial number of these patients are capable of self-motivation and committing to cooperate with the smoking cessation treatments being offered to them. Nowadays, scientific evidence shows us that these treatments are not only effective, but also necessary, given that they propose positive effects upon the quality of life of these patients, as well as being beneficial to the Healthcare System. It is because of this reason that the training of staff to properly deal with this issue is needed, as well as the updating of knowledge and more restrictive policies in the Mental Health sector. Key words: “Mental Health”, “Smoking Cessation”, “Nursing”.
