The Basque substratum of Spanish

  • Identification data

    Identifier:  TFG:1544
    Authors:  Chacón Heszele, Juan Andrés
    Abstract:
Abstract: there are numerous elements in the Spanish language which could have originated from the contact between Spanish and Basque in its early stages of development. The possible Basque origin of those elements has always come with a certain controversy: many traits have been attributed to other substrata before finally being attributed to Basque, while the Basque origin of some other is still entirely hypothetical. The objective of this project is to analyze the historic and linguistic elements which could point to a larger presence of Basque in the Spanish language than what has originally been considered, while, at the same time, break down the different characteristics of Spanish that could be attributed to Basque.
