The emergency nurse: The analysis of her image and her roles through "Nurse Jackie"

Abstract:
Nursing is a profession which has been persecuted by stereotypes and false perceptions that damage its image, being seen in a way that doesn’t fit with reality. A great source of information are the mass media, specially the television. The medical drama television programs create one or another perception around the image of nursing. The main objective of this project is to analyze the image and roles of the emergency nurse through the medical drama “Nurse Jackie” in order to determine if it fits or not with reality. The project begins talking about the media and its classification and the medical drama television programs and its plot. It continues talking about the nursing’s image and the stereotypes that appear in the media and next, about the emergency nurse and her functions and competences to make known the work of the nurse in this environment. To close the theory, in the section “Nurse Jackie” are exposed a few guidelines about the medical drama to put the reader in context through an overview and a description of the main characters. Finally, in the section “Results and discussion” are described six scenes that, as well as being meaningful, contain an argument that reflects a very specific and idiosyncratic image of the emergency nurse. With this scenes, it is concluded that the nursing image showed in this medical drama fits with reality in many parameters despite of belonging to a north American context and not European.
