Abstract:
Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is a condition characterized by irritation and inflammation and is a common consideration in patients with fecal and/or urinary incontinence. Due to the location and appearance of “moisture lesions”, they are often mistaken for pressure ulcers (UPP). Our goal is to demonstrate the importance of early detection and prevention of IAD. Determine the need to differentiate between an IAD vs UPP and identify the need to unify criteria. We did a systematic review of scientific papers searching in Pubmed - Medline, Cinahl and SciELO databases of the last ten years (2008-2018). We identified and analyzed 18 articles. The differential diagnosis, based on the visual examination, can help to determine if an IAD or UPP is present. Recommendations on its prevention and treatment are directed toward a proper care and hygiene of the skin, the use of barrier products, professional training and health education of the patient and family. The IAD is an underestimated subject on the part of institutions and health personnel. All this problem, makes us reflect on the importance that should be given, visualizing the problem to address these injuries in a comprehensive manner, involving all health professionals to become aware of it. More training and research is needed in this field, especially in validation studies of scales that help nurses to differentiate and diagnose an IAD of a UPP. A standardized care plan, the unification of criteria and avoid the diversity of actions before the same process; they will contribute to reduce the prevalence of IAD, their costs, the time invested by professionals in the treatment, but above all to improve the quality of life of the patient and their families.
