Abstract:
Background. There is little research that studies the position of the male figure during the process of birth and internment of his extremely premature child in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Objectives. Know deeply how to live and what role the father figure plays before the birth and internment in the NICU of his extremely premature child. Material and methods. Study based on qualitative research which simultaneously used the phenomenological focus through semi-structured interviews with two parents of premature children under 32 weeks of gestation. The inclusion criteria were established for convenience sampling. To produce the results, the data obtained by the informants were transcribed, analysed hermeneutically and classified by themes and sub-themes. Results. The results obtained allowed the classification of the following topics: 1) The experience of prematurity; 2) Information and support; 3) Feelings and emotions involved and 4) Paternal figure. Conclusions. The paternal figure lives the birth and hospitalization of his premature child in a stressful and overwhelming way. These events make him change his life, being his son and his partner their highest priority. This figure faces many unknown and complex situations that generate negative feelings and emotions. However, it has been shown that certain aspects such as the accompaniment by health professionals, the favorable evolution of newborns and the role that the father can take after birth and the hospitalization of his son to the NICU they make this experience not so traumatic. At the same time, the role that triggers this figure turns out to be totally functional, participatory and relevant, only to enter into the premature birth of your baby, providing multiple benefits both to the premature and the family structure
