    Abstract:
Breastfeeding has numerous benefits for both the child and mother; therefore, the WHO recommends breastfeeding for the first six months exclusively. Currently, a high percentage of mothers abandon breastfeeding within this 6-month period. Therefore, this study considers the role of health providers is crucial to prevent the premature abandonment of breastfeeding. Objectives: To understand the experience of exclusive breastfeeding’s abandonment and identify the support network available from healthcare professionals to help prevent the premature abandonment of breastfeeding. Methods: This is a qualitative study carried out through semi-structured interviews directed at first-time mothers who have carried out both complementary feeding and breastfeeding, and to nurses from the maternity area. Results: Mothers identified their babies’ lack of weight gain as the dominant reason behind the premature abandonment of breastfeeding, due to suction problem and hypogalactia. Stand out in a positive way the support from associations, further suggesting that professionals should consider placing more emphasis on the help they offer. Nurses highlight cracks and breast engorgement as the main reasons for consultation, which usually give rise to difficulties during the LM period. Both mothers and professionals agree that returning to work makes it even more challenging to continue breastfeeding. Conclusions: Mothers acknowledge the important benefits that breastfeeding has for their children. Nevertheless, identifying their babies’ lack of weight gain as the main cause for the abandonment of breastfeeding. It should be noticed that mothers do not refer to their own personal benefits. The nursing profession emphasizes the importance of follow-up and support for mothers, but mothers believe that the support received should be of better quality.
