    Abstract:
Background. Communication is vital for nursing, it is a basic tool in the "caring" process. This communication is hampered in patients requiring mechanical invasive ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The results of this study can help to produce and disseminate useful knowledge among professionals who are responsible for the care of these patients. Knowing the aspects to improve in these situations could allow enriching this communication thus benefiting the health of the patient. Objective. The main objective of this study is to find out how is the relationship/communication nurse-patient conscious with mechanical invasive ventilation at the ICU. Methods. A narrative review was performed on the one hand through the electronic databases Pubmed, Cuiden and Cinahl. On the other hand, qualitative research was used through the conversational method through individual interviews with three nursing professionals who worked at the ICU. Results. After the analysis of the interviews, a total of four categories were obtained: "Communication from the perspective of nursing", "Barriers perceived in communication", "The tools of augmentative and alternative communication'' and ''The nursing professional: what they feel and how they act''. Conclusions. It is clear the importance of keeping the patient informed at all times to increase their safety and confidence with the healthcare staff. More resources should be devoted to the investigation of new communication tools and at their disposal to services, so that it would be possible to provide each patient the possibility to express all their needs at all levels. The importance of promoting the education of nursing professionals in this communication is demonstrated in order to cope with the difficulties that it presents and thus to increase the well-being of the patients as well as the self-realization of professionals in their daily practice.
