    Abstract:
The present project aims to determine the feasibility of incorporating an absorption refrigeration system in the low temperature waste heat recovery in the industrial complex of Repsol Petróleo in the site of Tarragona. Energy department has identified the availability of waste heat in several processes and the need for cooling in different points of the refinery. Because of that, the use of an absorption chiller unit is evaluated, which would provide subcooled water using as energy source the waste heat that is currently squandered. This document describes the conceptual engineering package of an absorption refrigeration unit. It is estimated that a cooling capacity of 2.25 MW is suitable for cooling water for lowering the temperature of the air before entering the compressor of the Cogeneration II unit increasing the amount of electricity generated. The initial investment of the project is 578 k€ and it is expected that it will generate 8,000 additional MW per year presenting an internal rate of return of 71.4%, a net present value of 2,078.9 k€ and a payback period of 18 months. The implementation of this project would take place during a scheduled shutdown for inspection and maintenance.
