Abstract:
The interest in breastfeeding increases in the field of health, however, even providing a large number of benefits, there is a high rate of abandonment. Objective: The objective is to conduct a review of the literature about the benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and babies and the barriers to practice it. On the other hand, recover recent data from Spain on the type of breastfeeding and its duration to determine what factors influence its prolongation or cessation. Finally establish an association between the type of breastfeeding and its duration with the child's health status and healthy habits. We propose that the type and duration of breastfeeding are associated with a multitude of factors that can be linked to different dimensions, being able to act in parallel or even neutralizing its effects. Methodology: The search was carried out in CINAHL and PUBMED, together with another more generalized search in different sources and following the snowball strategy of the studies found. For the statistical analysis, the data matrix of the National Health Survey of 2017 has been used and work has been done with the free distribution program PSPP. Results: The average duration of the exclusive breastfeeding and frequencies of breastfeeding in our country are paired with worldwide recommentaditions. The influential factors in the choice and duration of breastfeeding respect to the mother are the smoking habit, place of birth, age and social class. There is a positive association between breastfeeding and health indicators for the child, such as BMI, breakfast quality or dental hygienic habit, but not in the general perception of health status. Conclusions: A new research path would be to perform a longitudinal analysis, incorporating data from previous surveys to complement the data found.
