    Abstract:
Breastfeeding is a historical, social and cultural practice that provides numerous benefits to the baby who receives it and the mother who performs it. The current scientific evidence corroborates these benefits and recommends this form of feeding exclusively during the first 6 months of the child's life. Despite its importance, the use and disuse of breastfeeding practice is a controversial issue that leads many mothers to abandon it before the stipulated time. In the present phenomenological study, it is intended to analyze, through qualitative research, which are the factors that lead mothers to renounce breastfeeding and how does the lack of support or strategies affect their maintenance, besides asking about the existence of a social pressure added to the new situation in which the mother is surrounded. Ethnographic interviews will be conducted in order to carry out an analysis that follows Taylor and Bodgan’s model (1987).The analysis of the interviews and the literature explored show how, at an individual level, the low perception of self-efficacy of the mother, at the level of relationships and community, the lack of support from health professionals and the return to the working world, and finally, at the social and cultural level, the social stigma of the breast, among others, make it difficult to maintain breastfeeding and provoke emotions and negative feelings in the mothers.
