    Abstract:
Our group was charged with the redesign of a Propane-Butane separation system due to the usage of a new propane feed that contains 20 weight% Butane, where the previous feed contained no more than 4 weight% of Butane. The existing column was simulated in the ASPEN PLUS software in order to obtain a thermodynamic model that could properly represent the laboratory data of the existing column, using real parameters of said column. The method obtained was the HYSPR method. The existing column was optimized so that it could produce a current of 94 weight% Propane. The new column was design with the capacity of producing a current of 99 weight% Propane if working by itself. All the necessary equipment for the correct operation of the column, such as heat exchangers, reflux drums, reflux pumps, pressure safety valves and control valves, were also designed. Detailed engineer related to the design of the column, which includes operation manuals, control methodology, start up and shut down manuals, environmental impacts, economic viability and spec sheets.
