    Abstract:
Abstract: Palliative care came up in the 1960s in the United Kingdom, aiming to guarantee comfort and the best quality of life possible, to people who have a grievous an incurable disease, which will cause his death. Lately, palliative care has become even more important, due to the increase in life expectancy and the chronicity of diseases. However, its implementation and evolution has been very different in each country, determined by policies, resources and social awareness. Nursing professionals, members of a multidisciplinary team, are responsible for providing holistic care to cover all the needs of the person at the end of life. Their formation is essential to provide quality care and deal with the growing demand. Objective: Analyse the similarities and/or differences of the palliative care provided in Spain and the United Kingdom. As well as identifying the role of nursing professionals and the social perception towards palliative care. Methodology: Descriptive bibliographic review. The documentation came from PubMed, Dialnet and SciELO databases. 421 documents were found in the searches and 31 of them, were selected. Results: The United Kingdom is considered the country with the most developed palliative care system. They have a general law as an organizing strategy, while in Spain, the palliative care depends on the laws of each autonomous community. The training of professionals seems insufficient and social perception seems that can be improved. Conclusions: Palliative care is more developed in the United Kingdom, due to their resources, policies and social awareness. Meanwhile, in Spain, the approbation of a national law to establish budgets, a specific formation system for professionals, the development and compliance of strategies, might improve the quality and perception of palliative care.
