    Abstract:
Introduction: Health education is one of the main tools of nursing in primary care that’s mostly focused on promoting healthy habits. Knowing the lifestyle of these professionals might help banish false myths about the nursing collective, increase their self-care and bring some improvements in their daily clinical practice. Objective: to describe and analyse health habits of nurses that work in primary care in the 3 basic health areas of Vilanova i la Geltrú. Methodology: descriptive cross-sectional study that combines quantitative methodology using valid questionnaires and qualitative methodology creating a focus group of discussion. Results: 31 questionnaires were obtained with a response rate of 88,57%, 100% of the sample was formed by females. 61,29% are between 41 and 65 years old. The body mass index (BMI) of the nursing professionals is normal weight for 61,29%, overweight for 29,03% and obesity I for 6,45%. Their adherence to mediterranean diet is 9,68% high, 83,87% moderate and 6,45 low. The final IPAQ results show that 67% have a moderate level of physical activity and that 100% of them walk a minimum of 10 minutes at least 1 day per week. 9,68% are smokers and according to Fagestrom’s test their nicotine adherence shows a low rate in 100% of the cases. 19,35% do not consume alcohol and 100% of those who do present a low risk consumption rate. For the nursing professionals, who participated in the focus group of discussion, the most important health habits are feeding and physical activity, while the toxic ones are tobacco and alcohol. The difficulties that they observe about making a health behaviour change are culture and deep-rooted customs. Some aspects of clinical practice such as knowledge and being in contact with the consequences of bad habits have an impact on the lifestyle of these nursing professionals. They don`t see themselves as a health role model for society, but rather as health agents. Conclusions: in general terms, the health habits of the nursing professionals of primary care that work in Vilanova i la Geltrú follow the recommendations of health guides. However, they could improve some aspects in order to accomplish them fully.
