Organ and tissue donation in Spain. A description of the literature

    Abstract:
    Introduction: Organ and tissue donation is a therapeutic alternative for the treatment of patients with terminal and irreversible organic dysfunction. There is a great demand for transplants, for this reason, the donor selection criteria have been expanded over the years. Nursing staff must be constantly trained as they have an important role in the care and maintenance of the potential donor and the care of their family. Objective: To know the state of organ and tissue donation in Spain, and what is the nursing function in this procedure, as well as to analyse what is the difference between organ donation and tissue donation. Methodology: A bibliographic review related to the organ and tissue donation process is carried out in different national and international databases. Results: A total of 28 articles related to the topic and meeting the inclusion criteria were selected. Conclusions: This study allows to know the situation of organ and tissue donation in Spain and highlights the functions of the nursing staff in this procedure. In addition, topics such as donor selection criteria and the role of bioethics in the procedure are developed.
