Abstract:
Background:According to INE, in 2018 3,539 people committed suicide in Spain, which shows a public health problem in terms of suicide prevention. It is also considered that nursing is the field that has more opportunities to identify and intervene in patients with suicidal tendencies. However, the existence of several barriersthat interfere with nurses' perceptions and attitudes towards suicidal behaviour, seemsto interfere with the proper assessment and approachof these users. Objective:In order to know the perceptions and attitudes towards suicidal behaviour by nurses, as well as their influence on its evaluation and approach, the present paper seeks to synthesize and integrate the results of qualitative studies that evaluate the variables at issue.Methodology:The data has been obtained through a research, from January to March2020, inthe following professional health databases: Pubmed, Scopus, Cinahl and Web of Science. However, itis a systematic review of qualitative studies, with an interpretative and explanatory nature, that follows the metasynthesis model for the analysis of results. Results:The total number of articles included in this paper has been fifteen. By conducting a critical reading of said articles, five thematic categories that summarise the results of the evaluated studies and the objectives set have been obtained. Conclusion:Based on the findings, the potentialities and limitations of each health service in relation to the evaluation and approach to suicidal behaviour; the sociocultural influence on the perception of suicide by nurses depending on the country; the therapeutic attitudes of nurses in clinical practice and the emotional and professional repercussions of suicide have been identified. Overall, the paper provides a vision of the path that is being followed, from a moralistic stance toward suicidal behaviour, to the understanding of the pathology that has to be assessed, treated and prevented. Keywords:Suicide, Suicidal behaviour, Nurses, Nursing, Perception, Attitude, Qualitative research.
