Abstract:
ABSTRACTIntroduction:The prevalence of patients with peripherally inserted central venous catheters is increasing; that’s why its numerous benefits have made this device a very interesting option, being the catheter of choice on multiple occasions due to its lower risk of complications. One of its main adverse effects is the infections of the bloodstream associated with the catheter, making preventive measures is essential for its proper functioning.Objective:To identify the optimal nursing approach in relation to the patient with a peripherally inserted central venous catheter.Methodology:A systematic literature review of the literature was carried out including articles indexed in the Pubmed, CINHAL, Scopus and Dialnet Plus databases published in the last 5 years, which reflected preventive aspects of complications related to the central venous catheter with peripheral insertion.Results:Fifteen articles, that met all the research criteria, were included and grouped into 3 categories. We find 9 of them about the interventions related to the prevention of infections associated with theperipherally inserted central venous catheters, 2 of them related to the psychosocial impact on the life of patients carrying the peripherally inserted central venous cathetersand 4 articles regarding the nursing knowledge of catheter care and the interventions aimed at promoting them.Conclusion:Preventive strategies for an impeccable approach should focus on proper device maintenance, nurse education and training, and the psychosocial complications necessary for patients with peripherally inserted central venous catheters.Keywords:“central venous catheter inserted peripherally”, “central venous catheters”, “catheter-relatedinfections”,“health knowledge, attitudes, practice” and “quality of life”.
