The prison as a place of toxicological treatment. Family and social worker intervention

    Abstract:
    This paper aims to provide a set of empirical quantitative and qualitative data which show the penitentiary treatment to former offenders with toxicological problems serving sentences in Catalonia prisons, particularly in Tarragona prison. This treatment focused his attention on the individual through the application of addiction programs. Assuming that the penitentiary centers aims the socialization of former offenders, it is important to consider the relation of external systems related to the individual, taking special relevance the family and the social worker. The final results show an insufficient professional intervention to the families losing a big opportunity to train and teach strategies to this people with such an influential in their rehabilitation. This rehabilitation is important to prevent drug relapse witch drive to the delictive actions and to break the circle linked to the prison environment.
