Abstract:
ABSTRACT -Objective: To determine the nurses’ current knowledge about electrocardiography in the emergency department. -Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted throughout a questionnaire. Study subjects were nurses from emergency departments of three hospitals in Catalonia with at least 1 year of experience in the area. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: the first one was about the professional profile and the second one had 12 questions, 2 of them were theoretical and the others were 10 practical cases with electrocardiographic registers. A pilot test was carried out to evaluate its comprehension. A descriptive and bivariated analysis was done with T-Student. A signification of p<0,05 was assumed. -Results: 57 valid questionnaires were obtained (47,24% response rate). The 84,20% (n=48) were women and the average age was 40,51 (SD 9,30). The 91,20% had training courses and the principal way was face-to-face (84,20%). The average punctuation was 8,59 points (SD1,10). Significant differences between nurses’ experience and hospitals weren’t observed. When analyzing the training, significant differences were only observed when comparing the presence of training, considering non-training when it hadn’t existed or it hadn’t been done during the last 5 years (p=0,031). -Conclusions: The electrocardiogram knowledge of the emergency nurses’ is high. The experience and the hospital did not influence the level of knowledge. The training has an influence when performed during the last 5 years. -Keywords: electrocardiography, knowledge, nursing, emergency
