What do the Universitat Rovira i Virgili students know about sexuality, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases?

Abstract:
ABSTRACT This article summarizes the knowledge that students of the Colleges of Nursing and the Arts at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) have about sexuality, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases, comparing the two faculties and determining the contraceptive method most commonly used by these students. For this purpose, an observational and cross-sectional descriptive study was designed, involving a questionnaire made online using Google Drive, and this was sent to students in both faculties. In total, 288 people participated in the study, comprising 175 students of nursing and 113 of the arts. Of these 288 participants 18% were men and 82% women. The condom was the most commonly used method (60% of the sample) for contraception and for avoiding sexually transmitted diseases. No significant differences were detected between the students of the two faculties in terms of knowledge about sexuality, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases. It should be noted that less than 40% of students know that the male is the bearer of the human papillomavirus. Also they erred in the following questions "birth-control pills are the best method for preventing unwanted pregnancies" and "lubricating oil can’t be used with a latex condom". But we were surprised that nursing students did not do better than those of the arts, it seems essential to review pregraduated training in nursing to improve students’ knowledge in this theme.
